She married John Napier Bathgate on 14 June 1954 in Kingsland, Camden, Georgia. They had no known children. The couple divorced in May 1959. She married Maximo Abeyta on 4 Feb 1963 in Santa Clara County, California. Dorothy passed away on 19 January 1983. Her ashes were scattered by her daughter, Doris.

Struck by a Capital Traction car as she toddled playfully across the street near her home yesterday afternoon, Emma Dorothy Hunter, four years old, daughter of Henry H. Hunter, casemaker at the navy yard, and living at 610 Eighth street northeast, received injuries which may result fatally.
Dr. Robert C. Ruedy, 621 Maryland avenue northeast, was called and discovered that she had received a concussion of the brain and internal injuries. Up until a late hour last night the little girl had not regained consciousness.[16]
