Biography

John was born about 1747. He passed away about 1845. Some sources state his middle name as William, and other sources state middle initial is "D".

According to The Hunter History and Family Tree[1]: JOHN... enlisted in the British armed forces in 1775 and thus made his way to America.

JOHN was aboard one of the ships the British sent against the colonies in 1776. While riding at anchor just off the East coast he and a drummer boy made their way ashore. The new country looked good to them so they decided to desert and headed inland. They were declared deserters and a search party was sent to find and bring them back. While being pursued they sought refuge in the woods, became separated and never saw each other again.

JOHN became an American citizen, and before the war ended, he joined the American forces. Later he settled in North Carolina and married Elizabeth Maben. Thus JOHN HUNTER became the first Hunter of our line to come to America and became the ancestral father of the large American HUNTER family. To this union of JOHN and ELIZABETH HUNTER, seven sons were born: Thomas, James, Rev. William, John, Joseph, Samuel and David. So JOHN became the trunk of the family tree, and his seven sons, the seven branches of the tree.

In 1807 the Hunter migration westward began. They moved into Tennessee. In 1817 they moved on to Illinois Territory settling in what is now Bond County.
