Biography

Scottish flag
Sarah (Hunter) Mckechnie was born in Scotland.

Sarah Hunter was baptised on 16 February 1822 at Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Scotland to Henry Hope Hunter and Elizabeth Bryson. [1]

She was one of Henry and his wife's family who emigrated to Australia in 1838, departing on the ship Lady Kennaway from Leith Roads, Scotland on 19 April 1838 and arriving at Sydney on 11 August 1838, with 283 immigrants and 5 cabin passengers. Sarah was aged 15 on the passenger list, and gave her occupation as House Maid, and with 5 siblings. [2] The IFHAA Shipping Pages document also contains the Surgeon's interesting report on conditions on the Lady Kennaway a ship of 583 tons. [3] The Passenger list also indicates she and all the family were born in Edinburgh.

Sarah married Thomas Mc Kechnie in 1839 at Scots Church (Presbyterian) Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. [4]

She died, aged 28, on 15 December 1851, in Sydney, New South Wales,[5] in the same year as her last child Sarah was born and died. [6]
