He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England. He graduated from Balliol College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the [Scots Guards. He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) for Ayrshire in 1975. He lived in 2003 at Blairquhan Castle, Maybole, Ayrshire, Scotland.
