Biography

Joan probably was born circa 1280 (see Research Note, below), the daughter of Sir Roger Huntingfield of Huntingfield, Suffolk and his wife, Joyce d'Engaine, the daughter of John d'Engaine.[1][2][3][4]

She married Sir Richard Basset, 1st Lord Basset of Weldon[4], son of Ralph Basset and Alianore de la Wade, circa 1299. As her dowry, Joan brought to the marriage the manor of Wilstone in Tring, Hertfordshire.[2][3][5]

Joan and Sir Richard had three sons:

  • Sir Ralph Basset, 2nd Lord Basset[1] Joan is not mentioned in that IPM, but neither is her brother, Roger, who was alive at that time.[6][4] Joan's husband died a prisoner after the battle of Bannockburn, which was fought on 24 June 1314.[1][3] There is no existent IPM for Sir Ralph's death, and thus there is no evidence if she was still alive as of that date.
