Biography

Mary Huntley, daughter of John and Jane Huntley, was baptized at Roxbury, Massachusetts on 3 December 1660.[1]

Virgil Huntley identifies her as the "Mary" or "Marah" who married John Smith, son of Richard and Joanna (Quarles) Smith, at Lyme, Connecticut,.[2][3] John Smith died at Lyme on 16 Sep. 1736 at age 81.[1] They settled in Lyme, Connecticut, on land granted to them in 1702 near "4 Mile Stream," a south-flowing stream in the western part of what later became the town of East Lyme.[4]

Nine children were born to the marriage:[4][5]

  1. Martha Smith. born 8 August 1686.[6] She married Isaac Tubbs before 1710.[7]
  2. Ruth Smith; married first on 23 October 1718 to Edward Robbins, who died 5 Dec. 1731; second to John Lay (born 25 March 1783), son of John "the Elder" and Sarah Lay.[7]
  3. Samuel Smith; born about 1695; known as "Sergeant Samuel"; died 18 June 1737 in 42nd year (according to his gravestone).[7]
  4. Josiah Smith, born about 1696; married Rhoda; died 21 May 1769, ae. 73 (gravestone).[7]
  5. Jeremiah[8] or Jemima[9] Smith; Jemima was married on 19 November 1721 to Samuel Tinker, Jr.[7]
  6. Quarles Smith; had a deed from his father on 17 June 1722, married Mary _____, had issue.[7]
  7. Joseph Smith, born circa 1700; died 29 April 1725 ae. 25 (gravestone); had land from father 31 Aug. 1724.[7]
  8. John Smith, Jr.; had a deed from his father on 12 January 1725; died by 1730 (administration on his estate occurred on 10 March 1729/30). [7]
  9. Elizabeth Smith; married first to Daniel Smith on 17 December 1726; married second to Jonathan Reed on 14 March 1733/4.[7]
