Biography

Walter Hurd was born on the 24th of September 1856, the son of book-keeper Thomas Ellis Hurd and his wife, Sarah Foster at home at Christopher Street in Leeds. [1]

St Peter.
Walter was baptised at St Peter on the 31st of October. [2] His father died in 1859 and Sarah turned to keeping a lodging house at 11 Hope St., for a living. [3]

[1] [2] [3] In 1863 Sarah married her lodger, John Hood, a printer's pressman from Scotland and in 1871 they were all living at 28 Sheepscar St and Walter and his brother, Arthur, were being called Hood. [4] Around this time Walter was apprenticed to a brushmaker and on the 15, 22 and 29 July 1877 at Holy Trinity Church in Leeds, Banns of Marriage were read for Walter and Esther Anne Simpson, daughter of Joseph Simpson, brushmaker, quite likely Walter's apprentice master. They married in August. [5]

In 1881 Walter, Esther and their three young sons were living at 41 Roundhay Rd, the home of Walter's older brother Arthur and his wife, Lottie, who was Esther's sister. [6] Esther, and Walter were living at Barwick in Elmet in 1891 with their family which by then included a daughter, Florence. [7]

By 1901 they were back in Roundhay Rd at number 144. [8] In 1911 Walter and Esther had their own shop at 229 Roundhay Rd. Only Walter still lived with them, working as a plumber in the family business. John Henry had married Mary Alice Hornsey in 1904 and Florence had married Francis Hawkins in 1905. Their eldest son, Arthur, was working in Northern Ireland. [9] Walter married Florence Britton in December that year.

When their eldest son, Arthur, married Bertha Dawson on the 29th of August 1912 he gave 229 Roundhay Rd as his address. Soon after this Walter and Esther retired to the seaside town of Bridlington, a favourite holiday destination for the citizens of Leeds, perhaps because Walter was ailing. He died on the 21st of October 1912 at home at 4 Springfield Ave., Bridlington of heart disease aged 56. His trade was recorded as paint brush maker. [10] [11]

Gypsey Race.
4 Springfield Avenue no longer exists, having been destroyed by bombing in the second world war. In 2016, as part of the redevelopment of Hildethorpe Rd, most of the other houses on that side of Springfield Avenue were demolished revealing the course of the Gypsey Race as it made its way to the harbour. Walter was buried in an unmarked grave in Bridlington Cemetery, plot number K146. [12] He left an estate valued at £407 18s probated to Esther on 16th November. [13]
