Biography

Rosannah ("Roesey") Heard married William Rogers near the southwestern Virginia frontier on April 11, 1786.[1]

At least one researcher claims Rosanna was the sister of John Herd, and that both were the children of George Heard (abt.1742-1791). She also claims that Rosanna died in about 1806, that her brother John died in about 1805, and that Rosannah's surviving widower William Rogers married John's surviving widow Susannah (Walling) Herd in about 1807.[2][3]

Children

Children of William Rogers and Rosannah Heard reportedly included:[4]

  1. Peggy Rogers (1787 – 1881)
  2. Nancy Rogers (1788 – 1883)
  3. Dauswell Rogers (1789 – 1866)

Research Notes

The marriage of William Rogers and Roseanna ("Roesey") Heard was recorded in Henry County, Virginia. [1] However, at least one researcher claims that the minister who recorded it in Henry County (Joseph Anthony) was a circuit rider who actually performed the ceremony in Montgomery County.[4]

The original source for the claimed identification of Rosanna and John Herd as siblings and their parental relationship with George Hurd is unclear. Further research to confirm these claims is pending.

The original source for the children of William and Rosannah is not given in the FAG memorial and should be confirmed with original source citations.

Some researchers identify her husband as William "Perry" Rogers, but it is unclear what the claimed source is for this middle name. The marriage record identifies him only as William Rogers and other researchers have disputed that his middle name was Perry.[5]

William Rogers who was born 14 Oct 1765 is recorded in the Walling Family Journal. The Walling Family journal has lots of important names and dates in it. I know because I have a copy. Guess what it has the names of Susannah's Herd children listed there. So, she did marry John Heard the brother of Rosannah after all. And, William Rogers raised them because John died and Rosannah died. William and Susannah married and raised each others issue.

William Rogers NEVER had a middle name. Someone on the internet found a William Perry Rogers about 3 or 4 generations later and spread the word that William's middle name was Perry.

If you will go to White Co. TN, courthouse and the Henry Co. VA courthouse and the Montgomery Co. VA courthouse you can see that most of what is posted here can be found there. Start with the issue of William Rogers. Order a copy of his Will as they are all named in it. If you go to the cemetery in White Co. TN, you will find Susannah Rogers is buried in the very same place as William Rogers. If you will go to Montgomery Co. VA and read the deed records, you will find that William Rogers sold land to George Heard and his family who had come from Henry Co. VA. Look at the date on the deed of William Rogers to George Heard and look at the date on the marriage of William Rogers to Rosannah Heard. How do you suppose that marriage record got in the Henry Co. VA courthouse if the Rogers and Heards are living on Elk Creek in Montgomery Co. VA? A circuit riding minister named Joseph Anthony did it because there were no ministers, churches, or towns on Elk Creek. Only Indians.
I am the Rogers descendant who FIRST put out the ancestors and descendants of Doswell Rogers. When I wrote the Rogers book in 1976, I did NOT know what I now know. I have been developing the family since 1968 so today in 2022 I have most of it documented from myself back to York Co. VA and now know the secret of the surnames DOSWELL &

ADUESTONE AS THEY WERE REPEATED OVER AND OVER AGAIN IN ONLY THIS ROGERS FAMILY WHO CAME TO AMERICA in the 1600's to York Co. VA.

Rosannah (Heard) Rogers died ca 1806 in Hawkins Co. TN. Her brother, John Heard, died there shortly after her or before her. Their spouses--William Rogers and Susannah Heard--married each other in Hawkins Co. TN because William had 12 issue and Susannah had 6 issue and they married in order to raise the children who were already related to each other as first cousins.

I know that the marriage record for William Rogers and Rosannah Heard is located in Henry Co. VA. However, it was put there by Joseph Anthony who was a circuit riding minister and that is where he lived with his family. William Rogers and his father, Doswell, lived in Mont. Co. VA in 1786 on Elk Creek. George Heard and Rosannah lived there, too. I have the deed where Doswell Rogers sold some of his land to George Heard there in 1785. And, besides THIS George Heard NEVER lived in Henry Co. VA nor did Doswell or William Rogers ever live there because when they crossed over the Blue Ridge the County of Henry (1776) had NOT yet been created. The Rogers and Heards were making records in 1771 in Botetourt Co. VA on the other side of the Blue Ridge Mtns .

Yes, there is a George Heard and a William Rogers living in Henry Co., but they can be documented as being different men with the same names. In the case of George Heard that Heard family in Henry Co. are his RELATIVES.

Joyce Poole who wrote the book on the history of the Heard family and I NEVER could document who was the REAL mother of Rosannah Heard. And, we both spent 40 to 50 years researching the records trying to find her name.

Eleanor Rogers Edmondson DESCENDANTS OF DOSWELL ROGERS

I have several documents for William Rogers during his life time. NONE of them ever give him a middle name much less "Perry" which is NOT a Rogers family name. However, 3 OR 4 generations AFTER William DIED there is the first William Perry Rogers recorded.
