Isabella Hurt/Hart married Philip Pendleton in Virginia by about 1682, giving her an estimated birth year of 1664.[1] D.C. Beahm notes that her birth date is sometimes given as 26 April 1654 and her death date as 6 Nov. 1724 but that he has seen no primary records for these claims.[1]
According to Beahm [internal footnotes omitted]:[1]
Philip's wife, Isabella Hurt, first appears in the records of Old Rappahannock Co., Va., as a witness, along with her husband, to a deed from Ralph Nell on 30 Sept. 1684. In the few court records in which Isabella was a witness, the clerk's copies indicate no mark by her name, suggesting that she was at least semi-literate. There are no patents in Virginia where Isabella was listed as a headright, so it has been assumed she was born in Virginia. Torrence suggested that Isabella may have been related to the William Hurt, Sen., who was listed in the 1704 quit rents of King William Co., Va. This William Hurt, Sen., may have been the man of that name listed on a patent to Mr. Stephen Hamelin on 26 Oct. 1650....While it is possible that William Hurt, Senr., was the father of Isabella Hurt, based on both chronology and proximity, the fact that none of the three sons of Philip and Isabella Pendleton was named William, makes such parentage problematic, given that at that time it was common to name of the sons after the maternal grandfather.
Ray Blevins states, without source, that the father of "Isabelle" Hurt was Gen. William Hurt, an immigrant to American, who was born c. 1630 and died after 1704.[2]
Beahm provides the following list of Philip and Isabella's children from the Bible of their grandson, Edmund Pendleton:[1]
