Biography

Leona was born 21 Sep 1916. She was the daughter of George Madison HURT & Callie DAVIS.

Leona graduated from Southeastern Teachers College in Durant, Oklahoma and received her Masters Degree from Trenton State University in Trenton, N.J. She was an elementary music teacher in Oklahoma and Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. In Stroudsburg, she taught at Ramsey and Morey Elementary Schools for over 25 years.

On 21 Jul 1935 in Ardmore, Oklahoma, she married Earl Willhoite.[1] Together they had two children: John Anthony Willhoite and Carol Jean Willhoite.

She passed away 05 Dec 2004.[2]

Leona Hurt Willhoite, 85, of Bradenton, Fla., died Aug. 28. She was born in Merrville, LA, Sept. 21, 1916, and moved to Bradenton two years ago from Stroudsburg.
She was a graduate of Southeastern Teachers College in Durant, Oklahoma and received her Masters Degree from Trenton State University in Trenton, N.J. She was an elementary music teacher in Oklahoma and Stroudsburg. In Stroudsburg, she taught at Ramsey and Morey Elementary Schools for over 25 years.
Leona conducted clinics and workshops for music teachers in six states and Washington, DC. She directed the All-State Elementary Chorus at The Forum for The Pennsylvania State Teachers Association Meeting in Harrisburg. She sang alto in the church choir and directed the youth choir at Stroudsburg Presbyterian Church where she was a member.
Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Earl; a son, John A. of Clifton, Texas; a daughter, Carol Jean Harmon of Bradenton, Fla.; a sister, Clara Oliver of Durant, Okla.; and four grandchildren: Keith Harmon of Alexandria, Va., Angelita Harmon of Reston, Va., David Willhoite of Germany and Benjamin Willhoite of Ocean Springs, Miss.
Memorial services were held at Freedom Village in Bradenton, Fla., on Sept. 4. Memorial donations may be made to the Music Department of First Stroudsburg Presbyterian Church, 579 Main Street, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.
