Biography

Samuel Hussey was born on 16 October 1800 and baptised on 19 Apr 1801 in Halberton, Devon. He was the son of Mary Hussey. No father's name is given. [1][2]

He married Emma Polk in Tiverton, Devon, on 4 October 1823. Samuel was a recorded as a sojourner in the parish, and Emma was resident. the marriage was witnessed by Sarah Williams and David Reeve (or Rewe). [3]

In 1841 Samuel and Emma (both aged 40) and their daughters Emma (15) and Mary Jane (18 months) were living in Tiverton in Bampton Street. Samuel was working as a carpenter. [4]

In 1850 Samuel's wife Emma died, leaving him with two daughters to bring up.[5]

In 1851 Samuel was living in Follett's Court, Tiverton with his two daughters: Emma (26), who was working as a laundress and dressmaker, and Mary (11). There was also a lodger, Harriett Hellyer (21) who was a dressmaker. Samuel was a widower and still working as a carpenter. His birth place is recorded as Tiverton, although on the records of his marriage to Emma he was recorded as a Sojourner in the parish. [2][6]

It appears that Samuel and his lodger got on quite well, because in 1852 Harriett and Samuel were married. [7]

Georgian houses on Bartholomew Street, facing All Hallows churchyard.
These houses would have existed when Samuel was living in Bartholomew Street.

In 1861 Samuel and his new family were living in Exeter, on Bartholomew Street, in the parish of All Hallows on the Wall. Samuel's date of birth is 10 years out but it is definitely the right family, so this is probably an enumerator error. Samuel is recorded as working as joiner, and the whole family's places of birth are recorded as Exeter. Possibly a lazy enumarator as well as an inaccurate one! [8] [9] Samuel and Harriett had three children living with them in 1861:

  • Mary E (aged 8)
  • Rosa (aged 5)
  • Charles (aged 2)

In 1871 Samuel, 70, was still living in Bartholomew Street, but we have the extra detail of an addess of Strongs Cottages. He was still working as a joiner, and now recorded his birth place as 'Abberton, Devon', which is probably a phonetic transcription of Halberton. Harriet was 42, and recorded her birthplace as Sandford, Devon. The couple had two children living with them:

  • Charles, aged 12 (who had been recorded in the 1861 Census)
  • Harriet Elizabeth, aged 8

Both children had been born in Exeter. [10] [11]

Samuel passed away in November 1873 and was buried in the Churchyard of All Hallows on the Wall. [12][13]

Research Notes

Baptism:

  • 19 Apr 1801, Halberton, Devon, England, mother Mary Hussey, no father recorded. Date of birth 16 October 1800. [1] Halberton is 5 miles from Tiverton. Given that on the 1871 Census Samuel's place of birth is recorded as 'Abberton' (which is not as far as I can see, a place to be found in Devon) I feel that on balance this is the correct baptism.Rowe-6599 13:24, 1 August 2019 (UTC)

Death:

  • 1873 Q 3 in Exeter. [13]By 1881 Harriett is a widow, so Samuel definitely died between 1871 and 1881. [14] Devon Burials from FMP shows that this Samuel Hussey was buried in the parish of Allhallows on the Walls (his residence in 1871) so I feel the evidence is strong enough to confirm 1873 as his date of death. The age is a couple of years out, but that often seems to happen with burial records.[12]

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Samuel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Samuel:
