Biography

Blanche Estella Hutchings was born in Hay Lakes, N.W.T. on June 19, 1880.

Her parents, Thomas Gifford Hutchings and Sarah Joan (Stanton) Hutchings were briefly settled at Hay Lakes just before they moved to Edmonton.

It has been said that Blanche was only the second white person to be born in that area.

Blanche and Giles Hayward Rowswell (Rowswell-195) were married at the Hutchings family farm on 50th. Street in north-east Edmonton in 1902. The farm was located just north of the "Little Mountain Cemetery". They raised six sons and six daughters.

Following his fathers death in 1899 Giles had taken over the management of the Rowswell family farm at Sect 14, Twp 54, Range 24, West 4.

Even with raising a large family Blanche still managed time to be a member of the Women's Institute, produced oil paintings and mastered a number of hobbies like soap making.

During their full lives, Hayward (Giles) and Blanche celebrated both their Silver and Golden wedding anniversaries.

Blanche passed away on April 22, 1979 at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton at the age of 99 years. She was buried in the Little Mountain Cemetery
