Biography

Peter, Sr. Hutchinson was born about 1748 and died about 30 Jun 1823.[1] No evidence or clues to his parentage have been found. Please refer to Uncertain Parents section. Based on the middle name of Peter's grandson, George Eireland Wells (son of his daughter Susannah), it seems likely that Peter was born in Ireland. Both the Wells and Green ancestral lines of George Eireland Wells are well known and have no connection to Ireland, indicating that the middle name likely came from his Hutchinson line.

Peter Hutchinson married Nancy Susannah Green in about 1769. Their marriage date is estimated based on the year of birth (1770) of their first child, Martha. Their whereabouts before coming to the Clinch in about 1781 are difficult to trace. Their daughter Susannah, born about 1779, gives her state of birth as North Carolina in the census records.[2][3]

Excerpt from the book COUNTRY ROADS AND LANES by Fannie Lane Steele: A Revoluntionary Soldier.
Peter Hutchinson, Sr. and Nancy Green Hutchinson lived in Culpeper County, Virginia, and moved to Botetourt (now Scott) County, Virginia about 1772. They came to Porter's Fort on the Clinch River with Samuel Stallard [who married Jael Duncan of Culpeper County, VA] and settled in the vicinity of Osborne's Ford (Dungannon), where they still lived in 1798. Peter was a soldier in the Revolutionary War for three years. He was in Colonel Nathaniel Gist's regiment, in Captain Samuel Lapsley's company.

From one of Thomas W. Carter's letters in the Draper Manuscripts (perh. # 4C26) [Note: Thomas W. Carter was a grandson of Patrick Porter]:

The first settlement in the county was made by Patrick Porter, Capt. John Montgomery (Porter's son in law), Raleigh Stallard [sic, This is a conflation of Raleigh (Rawley) Duncan and Samuel Stallard of Culpeper County, Virginia who both arrived early. Samuel Stallard married Rawley Duncan's daughter Jael Duncan], ______ Hutchinson, and Samuel, Patrick Porter's oldest son. They settled on Clinch River "in the fall after Colonel Lewis fought the five tribes on the Ohio River". Patrick Porter built a fort on what is now the Reuben Banner farm.[4]

There can be no doubt that "______ Hutchinson" refers to this Peter Hutchinson, whose eldest daughter Martha married Patrick Porter's son John. Futher evidence that Peter Hutchinson was early in the Porter's Fort / Clinch river ford (Osborn's Ford, now Dungannon) area is contained in a pair of depositions over a land dispute, given in 1798, but referring to events during the years 1770-1775, by Peter Hutchinson and Patrick Porter.

Deposition of Peter Hutchinson:
Peter Hutchinson deposes in Russel County, 30th June, 1798, that about June, 1775, he was frequently in company with Robert Elson, who told him that the land he lived on was Harbard’s and that he and some of his relations that lived at the same place were employed to keep stock. In the same year he heard a dispute between Rawley Duncan and John Duncan’s widow about the plantation at the ford of Clinch, where they both lived at that time, and understood that Rawley and his brother John were to go halves in the plantation.[5]

Deposition of Patrick Porter:
Patrick Porter deposes 28th April, 1798, that about 1770-1771 he moved to Clinch and a certain Robert Elsom came about the same time and settled at the head of Hay’s Creek.[5]

According to Scott County Deed Book 1, page 236, on 4 December 1816, Peter and his wife, Nancy made a deed.[6]

Peter Hutchinson and his wife Nancy were both still living in Scott County at the time of the 1820 census.[7]

Hutchinson-981 and Hutchinson-1628 appear to represent the same person because: They had the same wife and one of the children was attached to Hutchinson-1628 and the rest of the children were attached to Hutchinson-981. I moved all the children to Hutchinson-981 and would like to merge the two profiles.

Please source this profile so it can be determined which Peter Hutchinson Sr. is the spouse of Nancy Susannah Green, or if the 2 Peter's should be merged.
