Biography

Massachusetts state seal
Elizabeth (Hutchinson) Chappell was a Massachusettsan.
Elizabeth Hutchinson was born on May 13th, 1700 in Northampton, Massachusetts to Judah Hutchinson and Mary Bridgman.[1]
She married Caleb Chappell on December 6th, 1721 in Lebanon, Connecticut.[2] She was admitted to the First Congregational Church of Lebanon in 1725, joining her husband's place of worship.[3]
Following her husband's death in 1776, her son James moved in with and cared for Elizabeth for the last decade of her life. Given this arrangement, the parties combined their inheritance from the deceased Caleb.[4]
Elizabeth died on January 5th, 1785 in "the 85th year of her age". She was buried in Exeter Cemetery in Lebanon, Connecticut.[5][6][7]

Lineage

Gale Ion Harris, the author of an in-depth article about George Chappell, posited that Elisabeth could have been the widow of Jonathan Hutchinson.[8] Many researchers claimed that Elizabeth was the daughter of Judah Hutchinson and Mary Bridgman of Northampton, Massachusetts. Kenneth Kinman, descendant of Judah's brother Samuel, presented the following (compelling) argument for this connection:
  1. Elizabeth Hutchinson was born on 13 May 1700, making her the perfect age to be the wife of Caleb Chappell, since she would be 21 years old at marriage and had her last child at age 41 years (almost 42) before going into menopause.
  2. Although Judah Hutchinson apparently never lived in Lebanon, two of his brothers (John and Samuel) did live there.
  3. Furthermore, the age (in her 85th year) on her 1785 gravestone is also compatible with being born in 1700.
  4. Perhaps most importantly, the marriage and death records for Northampton, Massachusetts, seem to be pretty complete, and yet there is no mention of Judah's daughter Elizabeth Hutchinson after her birth record. No mention of her dying there young (or unmarried when older), and no marriage record. This indicates that she left Northampton, most likely between 1718 and 1721, and the most likely destination would be where her uncles John and Samuel Hutchinson had settled (namely Lebanon, Connecticut, where Elizabeth could then marry in 1721). It is possible Elizabeth went to help out when her uncle John died at Lebanon in 1719.
J. Goold, descendant of Elizabeth (Hutchinson) Chappell provided an excerpt of Judah Hutchinson's 1740 will that referenced a daughter, Elizabeth Chapwell. Chapwell was a less common spelling of the Chappell surname, but it does occur in several 17th century records. Another daughter, Ruth Chapwell was also mentioned in Judah's will and matches the woman who married Jonathon Chappell in Hebron, Connecticut in 1723.[9]
The combination of these facts provides overwhelming evidence that Elizabeth (Hutchinson) Chappell was indeed the daughter of Judah and Mary (Bridgman) Hutchinson.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Elizabeth by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Elizabeth:

In the "Disputed Origins" section, I am adding even more circumstantial evidence pointing toward Judah's daughter Elizabeth as wife of Caleb Chappell, as follows:

(4) And perhaps most importantly, the marriage and death records for Northampton, Massachusetts, seem to be pretty complete, and yet there is no mention of Judah's daughter Elizabeth Hutchinson after her birth record. (5) There may never be any direct evidence that Judah's daughter Elizabeth Hutchinson was wife of Caleb Chappell, but the combination of all this circumstantial evidence seems to strongly support that conclusion.

Elizabeth is my 6th gr-grandmother through daughter Elizabeth.

It should be noted that Samuel and John being brothers of Judah is circumstantial at best. Both were in Northampton at the times of their marriages to the Root sisters but only Samuel has a birth record there and his parents are not named.

UPDATE: The Carter genealogy "Descendants of Thomas Carter of Reading and Weston, Massachusetts and Hebron and Warren, Connecticut" p 258 lists the husband of Margery Carter as Rev Aaron Hutchinson of Hebron, CT ancestry --> Joseph --> John --> Ralph

As an aside, when I viewed the online image of Judah's will, it clearly shows Chappell as the married names of Ruth and Elizabeth

Hi Mike, You said "To conclude they are sons of Judah requires a plausible explanation for their omission from his will." However, I don't think anyone has concluded they are sons of Judah. They appear to be "brothers of Judah", so there would be no expectation that they should appear in Judah's will. Or am I missing something?

Hi Ken,

Yea, that was a really bad mistake on my part, I was reading the will of Judah all the while thinking it was of Ralph. Unfortunately Ralph died intestate and only his wife Alice and son Judah were listed as witnesses to the inventory of his estate. As soon as I realized my mistake I excised that portion of my comment but obviously too late! While he did actually have a son John, he died in 1730.

I have since found a published genealogy that refers to Rev Aaron Hutchinson of Hebron, CT as son of Joseph, son of John, son of Ralph so we have another bit of suggestive evidence. Sure would be nice to find the birth record for John in Boston. I added the new bit of evidence to my first comment.

Can someone provide evidence that Elizabeth (Hutchinson) Chappell was the daughter of Judah Hutchinson and Mary Bridgman? This is an important claim as it is the connection to the Wikitree Single Family Tree.

The birth date should be 13 May 1700 (not 17 April 1695).

(1) That makes her the perfect age to be wife of Caleb Chappell, since she would be 21 years old at marriage and had her last child at age 41 years (almost 42) before going into menopause. (2) Although Judah Hutchinson apparently never lived in Lebanon, two of his brothers did. (3) Furthermore, the age (84-85) on her 1785 gravestone is also compatible with being born in 1700. (4) In combination, the above circumstantial evidence is pretty convincing. Weblink to birth record: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FCQ8-9D9

I have now added all of this circumstantial evidence in the "Disputed Origins" section.

I appreciate you looking into this. We are making this connection based on an Elizabeth Hutchinson being born on 13 May 1700, and then a similarly aged Elizabeth Hutchinson marrying in the town where the first Elizabeth's uncles moved to. This appears to be the best guess we have to date, but I'm not yet convinced. Given the explosion of online trees that have accepted this circumstantial evidence, I gather that I am indeed in the minority here. I believe establishing a more rigorous connection here is important given that Elizabeth is some form of "gateway" ancestor for many people. That's not, however, my primary motivation, as I am merely interested in accuracy. I will continue looking into this, and appreciate any and all feedback.

Thank you, Wes. By the way, I have adopted the orphaned profile of Elizabeth Huntington (who actually was born 17 April 1695). She could not have married Caleb Chappell in 1721 or 1722, because she married Joseph Hunt in 1717 in Mansfield, and they had a son Samuel Hunt born in 1725 in Mansfield, Connecticut. Hutchinson-1032 and Hutchinson-5145 appear to represent the same person because: Both profiles are for Elizabeth Hutchinson, wife of Caleb Chappell.

Hutchinson-4624 and Hutchinson-5145 appear to represent the same person because: Elizabeth Hutchinson married Caleb Chappell. They had a daughter Elizabeth who married James Gould/Goold. One of these profiles mistakenly uses the daughter Elizabeth's married name for the mother's.
