Biography

Catherine was born in 1804 in Saint John, New Brunswick. She was the daughter of Andrew Hutchinson and Elizabeth Stymest. In 1825 she married William Henry Travis, often called W.H., and her father Andrew was a witness. The couple lived in Saint John all their married life. They appear to have had only one child, a son Allan McNab Travis but a niece was living with them in 1871. Jane Hutchison, age 18, was Jennie Hutchison, daughter of Catherine's brother Robert Hutchison. He had died soon after Jennie's birth and her mother remarried but she died in 1867. W.H. Travis was an official of the government customs. When he died in 1874, Catherine lived with son Allan McNab Travis in Hampton, located about 20 miles north east of Saint John. She passed away in 1895 in her son Allan's house in Hampton. From the Saint John Globe, dated March 19,1895: "The death is reported today of Mrs. Travis widow of W.H. Travis for many years an official of the customs of this city. Mrs. Travis had reached the ripe old age of nearly 92. She had been in good health until quite recently. Her son, with whom she has resided since the death of her husband in 1874, is A. McN. Travis, station agent at Hampton. She was a native of this city, a daughter of the late Andrew Hutchinson and was for 70 years a resident here. Her mother was a d/o late Jasper Stymest. She leaves a large family connection in the city and elsewhere."
