At the 1841 census Elizabeth (7) is living with her parents and siblings at Dukes Row, Aspull, Lancashire. The household also comprises her parents Peter (50), a coal miner, and Mary (50) and siblings Charity (25), John (15), Peter (14), Mary (10), and Margaret (3).

By the 1851 census Elizabeth's father Peter had died (1845) and the family had moved to 3 Ladys Lane, Hindley, Lancashire. The family now comprised Elizabeth (16) a rover at a cotton mill, her mother (57) a housekeeper, siblings Mary (20) a reeler at a cotton mill, Margret (13) a throstle spinner at a cotton mill and Peter (23) a coal miner. Also there was Ann (25), Peter's wife also a throstle spinner and Peter's daughter (11 months).

NOTE: A reeler operated the machine that wound the yarn onto the bobbin and a throstle spinner attended a spinning machine known as a Throstle, due to the noise it made, which resembled a lark, or throstle. The machine was used for the continuous spinning of cotton (or wool) simultaneously onto long rows of, perhaps 300 or 400, pirns or bobbins.
