In the 1841 Scotland census Mary was 21 years old and employed as a servant at the home of Helen Ireland in Wellington St West Side, Dundee, Angus.[2]
In the 1851 Scotland census Mary was 38 years old and employed as a house servant in Roxburgh St (from & Park), Greenock West, Renfrewshire.[3]
In the 1861 Scotland census Mary was 42 years old and a servant at the home of Robert Bachanan in Mount Park, Greenock West, Renfrewshire.[4]

Note According to Scottish OPR's Mary's mother was Catharene FAIRLIE. The maiden name MCFARLANE shown here is only for consistency among a variety of spellings of the fore and surname of Robert's wife. There were two possible marriages for Mary:
John Dean, 27 May 1854, Kilwinning. (Children: Mary 1, James, Mary 2, Jane)
Robert Gairdner, 23 June 1853, Kirkmichael. (No children recorded on the IGI).
