Biography

He emigrated from Wustweiler to Hungary and was recorded in Vienna on 16 May 1766.[1]

Him and his wife Anna settled in Sackelhausen (currently: Săcălaz, Romania), where she gave birth to their daughter Anna Maria on 22 October 1768. Godfather was Petrus Schneider,[2] who probably was identical with Hans Peter Schneider, who also was among the six parties from Wustweiler registered in Vienna.[3]

Until 1782 Anna gave birth to nine more children. They were living in house #60.[4]

From June 1784 until July 1785, they were accommodating the colonist Joseph Hofmann in their house, before he was able to move into his own house in St. Andras.[5]

Research Notes

Wilhelm and Kallbrunner transcribed his name as Hey,[3] while the original record might also be Huy (especially when looking at Mr. Puk a few lines above).[1]

Großjetscha

Hummel and Fuhry assume that the couple later moved to Großjetscha (currently: Iecea Mare, Romania),[4] where "Anna Maria, wife of Stephan Hui" passed away on 14 August 1802 aged 54 years. Her origin is stated as something that could be read as "Germanica Lotharingia in Wußveyer"[6]

On 18 January 1803 a Stephanus Hui marries Elisabeth Smolik with witnesses Andreas Handler and Joannes Groß.[7] Hummel and Fuhry assume that this is the widower re-marrying, but the record itself neither states age, status nor origin of the groom and the bride.

On 23 Oct 1807 a 79 year old Stephanus Hui passes away in Großjetscha.[8]

If these are all the same people, Stephan would have been born around 1728, while Anna would have been 20 years younger. Although it is not unlikely, it might be also possible that people were conflated here.

Origin

Wustweiler is composed of Wustweiler and Wustweilerhof, separated by the river Illbach. Wustweiler belonged to the parish of Uchtelfangen, while Wustweilerhof belonged to Illingen.[9]

Potential relatives

Hummel and Fuhry list two more people named Huj[4] that would have been born roughly around the time Anna (Maria) was born (in case the person from Großjetscha is identical to the one from Sackelhausen):

On 1 August 1774 Georg Huj marries Anna Maria Rumel in Sackelhausen.[10]

  • to do: look at original in Timisoara, as the microfilm is full with ink stains
  • may the witness in the marriage above be identical with Andreas Hie?

On 26 August 1781 Margaretha Huin "ex Imperio" passes away in Sackelhausen aged 38 years. She was living in house #60, which is the house of Stephan.[11]
