Betty was born to Mack Hyler and Ruby Waters in Atlanta, Georgia on 7 November 1931. Her parents had only married 10 months prior. According to what Betty's mom told her, Betty's father left shortly after her birth to "find work" during the Great Depression. Betty did not see her father again until she was a teenager. Due to her father's absence, Betty knew nothing of her paternal family.
On the other hand, Betty was quite close to her maternal family. She lived with her grandparents, Leverett and Louise Waters during parts of her childhood. The extended family moved between Atlanta, Georgia and Greenville, South Carolina.
Many memories of Betty's childhood and family were lost when she was hit by a car and seriously injured. She was not sure of her age at the time, but was likely around 8 years old.
It was in Greenville that Betty met her future husband, Roy. Roy liked to tell his children that he first saw Betty when she came into a local store in Greenville where he and his friends were hanging out. He fell in love at first sight and told immediately his friends to stay away because he was going to marry her. Roy says that he proposed by giving Betty $5 and telling her to go buy them a marriage license. The couple were married on 1 February 1947 in Greenville. Betty was only 15 years old at the time, but lied on the license and claimed to be 16.
Betty was a housewife and raised six children.
Betty's birthday is recorded as both November 7th and November 8th on different documents. A newspaper announcement gives it as November 8th, as does her birth certificate. On the other hand, her grandmother Louise Smith Waters'Bible gives the date as November 7th. Betty herself always celebrated her birthday on November 7th. Her death certificate reflects the Nov 7th date as well.
Betty is buried next to her husband, Roy, at Westview Cemetery (Atlanta, Georgia) in section 50, Lot 327, Plot 2. She is next to her mother-in-law, Auline. Betty's Uncle, Milton Waters is also buried in this cemetery.
