Abraham Hyatt was born to Nathan and Anna Hunt Hyatt in White Plains on 20 May 1747.[1] One respected source has the birth date at 7 June 1747.[2] Perhaps confusion arises from the shift from Julian to Gregorian calendar a few years later, or perhaps one of those was his baptismal date?
Abraham Hyatt was a Soldier of the Revolution, serving as Lieutenant in the 4th regiment of the New York Line. [3] His commission dated 21 Nov 1776 as 2nd Lieutenant was signed by John Hancock [4], his commission in 1779 as 1st Lieutenant was signed by John Jay.[1] He was mustered in Valley Forge in the winter of 1777-1778, reported as sick in quarters.[5]
Abraham was in Beekman as early as 1769, when he purchased items from a store there. He initially settled, along with his brother Nathan, in Dutchess County in 1773, initially taxed in Rombout and later in Beekman.[2]
Abraham Hyatt removed from Dutchess after his military service and re-settled in the village of Chappaqua, town of New Castle, or perhaps the adjoining Town of North Castle, Westchester County, New York State..[1] He held a series of civic posts in North Castle beginning in 1786.[2]
Abraham Hyatt married Sarah Ryder/Rider, daughter of Caleb Ryder.[2] One source says they married on 6 Jan 1779,[6], but perhaps it was 6 Jan 1769, which fits better with their ages and the birth of their first child.
Abraham Hyatt died in Chappaqua on 30 June 1820.[2] He was buried in the Dale Cemetery in Ossining; his descendants erected a large monument there with a inscription honoring his Revolutionary War service. His wife Sarah Rider was buried there also, on 1 June 1805, aged 55 years, 3 months, and 13 days per the monument, suggesting that she was born 18 March 1750 (or 7 March, if the memorial allowed for the 11 day jump in the calendar in 1752). The monument is still legible, judging from photographs posted on findagrave.[1]
Abraham and Sarah Hyatt had, in North Castle or Chappaqua, at least eight children:[2] or perhaps only four[1]
