Notes

Hyde Genealogy 1868 Page 8 Thomas is #7

Numerous Historical genealogies confused the lineage of Mary Backus. There were two Mary Backus'. One Mary was born to William Backus' son Stephen and one Mary was born to William Backus' son William and his wife Elizabeth Pratt. It is the last Mary that was the wife of Thomas Hyde.

I agree with the below that Thomas Hyde m. Mary Backus d/o William and Elizabeth (Pratt) Backus. Jacobus, Donald Lines, et al., Hale, House and Related Families, Mainly of the Connecticut River Valley (Hartford: Connecticut Historical Society, 1952) p. 455 agrees with this. The gravestone of Mary Hyde wife of Thomas, indicates she was born about 1677 not 1672 as indicated in the birth record of the dtr of Stephen. This was an easy mistake to make, since there is no birth record for Mary dtr of William, but Mary dtr of Stephen does have a record and was born in the proper time frame. Some other cleanup will be needed

Hyde-3764 and Hyde-838 appear to represent the same person because: Numerous Historical genealogies confused the lineage of Mary Backus. There were two Mary Backus'. One Mary was born to William Backus' son Stephen and one Mary was born to William Backus' son William and his wife Elizabeth Pratt. It is the last Mary above that was the wife of Thomas Hyde.

By merging the Thomas that I created with the proper wife, I feel the history of Thomas' wife will thus be accurate.

The Mary Backus that this Thomas is attached to is the wrong Mary. Thomas' wife Mary was the daughter of William (Stephen's brother) and Elizabeth Pratt. The genealogies have been confused in various publications. Most sources have William and Elizabeth as Mary Backus' parents. It is this Mary that is the wife of Thomas Hyde thus I am attaching this Mary to Thomas' profile and deleting the other Mary as his wife.
