Biography

Margaret, daughter of Nathan Hyde and his wife, Margaret Markland was baptised at Manchester Cathedral on the 1st of February 1782. [1]

Aged 20 she married John Cross, barrister of Lincoln's Inn on the 15th of November 1802 at Manchester Cathedral. [2] John came originally from Manchester and it is likely that they had known one another before he decided to "try his hand in London". John became Attorney General of the Duchy of Lancaster, King's Sergeant and Chief Judge of the Court of Bankruptcy before being knighted in 1831.[3] At the 1841 Census they were living at Whitehall Place, near the River Thames. [4]

John died very suddenly on the 5th of November 1842 and was buried at St Martin's in the Fields. By the account of John's nephew, Frederick Cross, Margaret decided that she and her daughter, Harriet, would be wise to move from their expensive home in Whitehall Place and settle outside of London. [5] Margaret and Harriet moved to Bath in Somerset.

Marlborough Buildings.
For a lady concerned with expense Margaret chose a remarkable house at 23 Marlborough Buildings a most upmarket address. The front of the house overlooked the Royal Crescent Mews. It wasn't as open of aspect as houses lower down but was a very good address.
Number 23.

In 1861 Margaret and Harriet were at number 23 and Margaret's 13 year old grandson, Alaric, was living with them. [6]

Margaret died on the 2nd of May 1864 [7] at home at 23 Marlborough Buildings in Bath. Her estate valued at less than £14000 was probated to her executors, her nephew, John, Baron Churston and her son, John William Cross on the 28th of May. [8]
