Biography

Elizabeth Hyde was born about 1778, the daughter of Nathan and Margaret Hyde of Ardwick in Lancashire. [1]

She married Thomas Wilson in Manchester Cathedral on 29 March 1800. [2] Together they had two sons and a daughter. In 1823 Thomas, who had already changed his name from Patten to Wilson in 1800, added Patten to his name. [3]

Thomas died in 1827 when Elizabeth was nearly fifty. She remained a widow for the rest of her long life. In 1861 she appears to still have been living in some style and managing her own affairs as her household consisted of only her and her servants including a butler. [4] Things were different in 1871 when she was 92 years old. Her grand daughter, Ellinor, was living with her and they were managing with three female servants to run the household. [5]

Elizabeth died on 5 June 1871 at 9 Lowndes Sq leaving an estate valued at under £40,000, probate being granted on 1st July to her son and sole executor, John Wilson-Patten of Bank Hall, Warrington. [6] Her death was registered in Chelsea. [7]
