He was a protestant and was single at time of transportation. Charged with Highway Robbery at the Salop Assizes on the 27 Jul 1836 and sentenced to Life and subsequently transported to Australia on the 'Prince George'. Arrived in Australia in 1837 aged 19 or 20. He was a miner and was sent to Newcastle, assigned to the A.A. Company.
In 1848 he applied to the Colonial Secretary's Office to marry Charlotte Preston, a native of the colony, a halfcaste. Permission was refused. At this time they were living at Burwood, near the mine. Their child, Catherine, died at Burwood, and an inquest was held in the house (death by overlaying) 1949 (Newcastle Chronicle), At this time Ann and Susan had been born. Inquest 5 Nov 1849 (Inquest Reel) MM 7 Nov 1949. James and Charlotte lived together unmarried,until her death in 1871, aged 40.
DEATH: James Hyde died on the 3rd May 1899 at Toronto, NSW, Australia. He was aged 92 and died from 'Drowning - not known how he came into the water'. Magistorial inquiry held at Toronto NSW on the 5th May 1899 - Certified by George P. Martin JP, conducting enquiry Newcastle, NSW. Informant was Mitchel Foley, son-in-law, Toronto, NSW. Witnesses were G. Blackwell and E. Brace. (Source 0119)
