Biography

John Hyde was born in Norwich, Connecticut on January 12, 1667, the second son of Samuel and Jane (Lee) Hyde. [1] [2] [3]

On March 3, 1697 or 1698, he married, in Norwich, Experience Abell, the second daughter of his first cousin Margaret Post and Caleb Abell of Norwich. They settled in Norwich and had nine children, all born in Norwich: [1] [2] [3]

  1. John, born December 5, 1698; married 1st, Sarah Haskins, 2nd, Elizabeth Backus.
  2. Experience, born September 7, 1700; married Samuel Gifford.
  3. Margaret, born August 16, 1702; married John Tracy.
  4. Eleazer, born December 12, 1704; married Sarah Hewitt.
  5. James, born February 28, 1707; married Sarah Marshall.
  6. Esther, born February 16, 1709; married Thomas Williams.
  7. Matthew, born April 28, 1711; married 1st, Elizabeth Huntington, 2nd, Hannah Pember.
  8. Lucy, born April 16, 1713; married Asa Waterman.
  9. Deborah, born January 22, 1716; married Ebenezer Thomas.

U.S. President Grover Cleveland is a lineal descendant of John and Experience through their son James. [2]

John was a farmer and in 1719, he purchased a farm of Nathaniel Backus, at Wawecus Hill. [1]

John Hyde died in Norwich on July 26, 1727 at the age of 59. He was buried in the Old Norwichtown Cemetery in Norwich. [1] [2] [3] [4]
