John Hyde was born in Norwich, Connecticut on January 12, 1667, the second son of Samuel and Jane (Lee) Hyde.

On March 3, 1697 or 1698, he married, in Norwich, Experience Abell, the second daughter of his first cousin Margaret Post and Caleb Abell of Norwich. They settled in Norwich and had nine children, all born in Norwich:
