The Hyder/Hider family had lived in this part of Germany for generations. However, times were changing and the Hyder family had many reasons for wanting to leave. The thirty years war had devastated this area, the lack of land, and the conflicts between the Catholics, Lutherans, and Calvanist people of the region, among them.Catholics even had so much trouble embarking on ships that most folks became Protestants and emigrated to Pennsylvania starting in 1709. In 1729, Hans Michael & Katherine Hyder went to Rotterdam in the Netherlands. There they caught a ship for America, called the Mortonhouse, on August 17th 1729. After a stop over at Deal, England (near the White Cliffs of Dover) they set sail for The New World. They landed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. –Immigrants Into PA by Elizabeth Cousins-also http://fourkings.freeyellow.com/Hyder.html say

Information about MICHAEL HYDER from Flintlock & Powderhorn magazine of Sons of the Revolution Sea Power in the Revolution vol 9 #1 Apr 1991 (found in McClung Historical Collection, Knox Co Public Library, Knoxville TN) MICHAEL HYDER moved from Hampshire Co, VA, South Branch of Potomac River abt. 1768 to POWDER BRANCH in BURKE CO. N.C., afterwards WASHINGTON CO NC, now CARTER CO TN, & settled on the farm now owned by A.J.F. Hyder in part & by Thos. Hyder, Jas. P. Hyder & J.W. Hyder’s heirs, where he died June 25, 1790 & is buried in the Hyder graveyard. He was engaged in all the Indian Wars. He was in Fort Lee on Wataugah with his family July 21, 1776 when the Indians attacked the homes. He was with Sevier in nearly all his expeditions both against the Indians & British. He was in the Battle of Musgroves Mill or Ennore. Volunteered to go to King’s Mountain but no one being willing to stay at home to watch for an Indian invasion, he with James Eden were detailed to patrol all East TN & watch for & report any approach of Indians. They learned of a contemplated approach of Indiana & sent for Sevier to hurry with his men to protect the infant settlement. The soldiers encamped one night at home & next morning started & met the Indians a little this side of where Knoxville now is & completely whipped them. This service required more circumspection & was more dangerous than the expedition to King’s Mountain. On their vigilance depended the safety of the women & children of the infant settlement. Oh, what a precious & how well did they perform their duty. A loss of 2 days & the women & children would have been butchered by the savages. Think of these 2 men alone more than 100 miles from any help—in the deep forest & nothing to east except the game they killed, & were in danger of being captured & killed every timetheir rifles fired.-This was a service which when performed any man might be proud of. The mention of this service ought to make the descendants of these men proud, & they ought to place a monument above their graves
