Biography

Johes Higbed was baptized on 29 Nov 1585 in Ivinghoe, Buckinghamshire, England, the father named as "Thome Higbed"[1] (Or November 30, 1585).[2]

John married first his first wife, probably about 1612.

There are five children baptised as children of John at Ivinghoe:

  1. Thomas baptised August 24, 1613[3]
  2. Edward baptised February 2. 1615/6[4]
  3. Henry baptised September 20, 1618[5]
  4. George baptised August 3, 1622[6]
  5. Robert baptised February 21, 1624/5[7]

John married secondly, Ursley Blacknole, on October 13, 1629 at Cheddington, Buckinghamshire, England.[8][9]

On October 1, 1640, "John Higbee of Ivinghoe" transferred all his "moveable cattle and Chattels whatsoevr" to his son George Higbee, a Vintner of London, as filed on January 12, 1640/1.[10]

John was probably the "Johes Higbed" buried on March 27, 1647 in Ivinghoe, Buckinghamshire, England[11][12]

The noncupative will of "John Higbid of Ivinghoe", proved October 2, 1647, names only a wife Ursula.[13]

Research Notes

This profile claimed, as do other online genealogies, that John's first wife was Rebecca. If no primary source can be found for a wife Rebecca, then it should be ignored.

John's noncupative will gives to his wife Ursula, and doesn't mention any sons. Clinton David Higby in his genealogy suggests that this means that Ursula was a second wife, and that all of his sons had scattered by this point - John's son George for instance was in London as per the 1640 gift.[14]

The marriage of "John Higbet and Ursley Blacknole" in 1629 was probably the record of this second marriage - Cheddington is a neighbouring parish to Ivinghoe.

Added an unknown first wife, attached his children there to prevent the children from be reattached to Ursula. If anything is known/discovered about his first wife it should go onto that profile.

I reformatted the biography, removed junk sources, moved notes to the research notes section, and added Higby's 1927 genealogy as a source with citations.

Ideally the Ivinghoe parish registers and the will books should be cited themselves, with Higby's genealogy moved to a "See Also" section under sources, and the findmypast ($) transcripts removed. If no one beats me to it, I'll try to get it done in the next couple weeks.

Almost all the links in the sources appear to be broken, do not work for me.

Higby-108 and Hygbed-2 appear to represent the same person because: Same wife, same father, same dates.

Ursula Blacknote seems to be a mistaken spelling for Ursula Blacknell (the 2nd wife).

The first wife may have been Rebecca Unknown.

Higbee-16 and Higby-108 appear to represent the same person because: All same family names. The 1629 wedding is more likely, as Ursala would have been a small child with the other date.
Higby-108 and Higby-112 appear to represent the same person because: Same spouse, child. Nothing conflicts.
