Reports in both the Hastings & St. Leonards Observer and the Sussex Agricultural Express outline the circumstances surrounding his death. It appears that he was suffering from what we would now call dementia and was rather prone to wandering around the house at night. On the night of 11 October 1889, this resulted in him falling out of a window and breaking his leg in two places. It was not clear how long he had been lying outside in the cold before he was found by a neighbour but a combination of the trauma and the cold resulted in his death later that day.
