Biography

Celia Hylton was born on 12 May 1794, according to her death age.

She married John Sutphin, possibly in Carroll, Virginia, about 1813 , as calculated from the 1814 birth of first child John Wesley Sutphin.

The 1850 census of District 11, Carroll, Virginia reported John Sutphin 60 and Selah Sutphin 56, with Julitha 19 and Fleming 16. John was a farmer with $7000 in real estate.^[1]

The 1860 census of Laurel Fork, Carroll, Virginia reported John Sutphin 70 and Sela Sutphin 66 with son Fleming 26. John was a farmer with $3000 in real estate and $527 in personal estate. Neither John nor Celia could read or write.^[2]

The 1870 census of Hillsville, Laurel Fork Township, Carroll, Virginia reported John Sutphin 80 and Celia Sutphin 76, with son Fleming D. Sutphin 36, Rachel Tolbert 35 and her two sons: James W. 17 and Benjamin F. 14. John was a farmer owning $1500 in real estate and $508 in personal estate. Fleming was a shoemaker. James was a farm laborer.^[3]

John Sutphin Sr., age 85 years 9 months 17 days, died on 12 Nov 1875 of old age and dropsy in the Eastern Division, Carroll, North Carolina. He was married, a farmer, born in Bedford Co. to Hendrick & Rachel Sutphin. Son F. D. Sutphin was informant.^[4]

Sela Sutphin, age 82 years 4 days, died 16 May 1876 of old age in Carroll County, Virginia. She was born in Montgomery, Virginia to Henry and Elizabeth Montgomery (sic).^[5]

Celia is buried at Tolbert Cemetery in Dugspur, Carroll County, Virginia.^[6]
