Johannes Phillipus Hyman, my Grandfather, was a Taxi Driver/Owner in Upington ever since I knew him. As children we sometimes teased him by calling him "Stadig maar Seker" (Slow but Sure), because he was an extremely good and safe driver. [2]

My Grandfather was a Taxi owner in Upington. We lived under the same roof (Semi-detached) and now and then got the chance to wash his car, internal and external. We did this because my Grandfather paid us each a little for the effort. Maybe a Sixpence or a shilling each, but the big score was that we had to draw 'sticks' to determine who would get the cash under the rear seat that dropped from the pockets of the clients as they get in or out of the car. We mostly shared the LOOT, but when we found a lot of money; like two or three half-crowns, we used to give it to my grandfather and he gave us each something smaller.
