James was born in 1888. He was the son of James Hyslop and Janet Robb. They migrated to NZ aboard the R.M.S.S Rimutaka, which sailedfrom London on 6th April 1895 and arrived in Port Chalmers, NewZealand on 30th May 1895. They settled in Greenfield, New Zealand; before that they lived in London . He passed away in 1918 age 30 [1]
JAMES ROBB HYSLOP. Mr Jas. Hyslop (Greenfield) has received advice from 'the Minister for Defence that his eldest son, Private James Robb Hyslop, has been killed in action in France. Private Hyslop, who was 31 years of age, enlisted in the 27th reinforcements, but was subsequently transferred to the 25th draft. He was born in London, and came out to New Zealand with his parents. He was educated at the Rongahere and Clydevale schools, and prior to enlisting worked on his father's farm. A brother of the deceased soldier is serving with the New Zealand forces in Palestine. [2]
Private James Robb Hyslop, Service number 49190, served in the NZ Army during WW1 with the Otago Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion -- see Nominal Roll Vol 3 (Roll 62), Page: 14. A farmer before enlistment, his next of kin was listed as James Hyslop (father) of Waterside, Greenfield, Otago. He embarked 26 April 1917 from Wellington, aboard HMNZT 83 the ss Tofua bound for Plymouth, Devon, England via the Cape of Good Hope. Arrival - 19 Jul 1917 with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF) 25th Reinforcements, Otago Infantry Regiment, D Company. Pvt Hyslop was killed in action on 10 April 1918 at the Somme in Northern France and is buried at Knightsbridge Cemetery, in Mesnil-Martinsart, France (grave reference A. 5) [3]
