Guy of Ibelin (French: Guy d'Ibelin) (1215/1218 – after May 1255) was marshal and constable of the kingdom of Cyprus. He was the fifth son of Jean Ibelin, Lord of Beirut and his wife Mélisende Arsouf or de Arsur[1]
His birth date is based on his participation in the Battle of Agridi in 1232, when he was considered to be 'of age'.[2]
He was appointed Marshal of Cyprus in about 1248, and Constable of Cyprus in about 1250.[2] He participated in the seventh crusade led by (St) Louis IX, King of France, and was at the siege of Damietta in 1249 and taken prisoner at the Battle of Mansourah (Al Mansurah) in February 1250 along with many French nobles including the King. He was a part of the negotiation party between the King and the Sultan[3] and was freed as part of the ransom organised by the King.
He died after May 1255.[2]
Joinville in his biography of Louis IX, described him as "one of the most accomplished knights I have ever known, and one who most loved the islanders [Cypriots] in his care"[4]
He married about 1240 Philippa Barlais, daughter and eventual heiress of Aimery Barlais and his wife, Agnes de Marqab.
They had ten children (not necessarily in order of birth):
