Mary was born in 1834 at Carlton Hill, Brighton, Sussex, England. She was the daughter of William Iles (a Master Shoemaker) and Elizabeth Guildford, who were married on the 12 April 1826 at Dorset Gardens Chapel (Wesleyan Circuit), Brighton, Sussex, England[1].
