•William supposedly added the "e" at the end of Iliff because he thought the name was too short.
Xenia Daily Gazette 30 Apr 1895: A cutting scene occurred at Cedarville yesterday evening. It seems that John Iliff and Geo. White, better known as Razor Blade White, got into a fight and White was getting the best of Iliff when Wallace Iliff, a nephew of John, took it up and began beating White, when the latter drew a knife and cut Wallace Iliff on the the [sic] thigh, making a stroke about an inch deep and eight inches in length. The parties were arrested and taken before Mayor Townsley this morning, when a fine of $20 was assessed against John Iliff and a fine of $5 against White who did the cutting. White has once served a term in the penitentiary. [Note: In 1904, Wallace Iliffe married Mayor Townsley's daughter, Frances Grace,]
St. Paul's Bible Church, Chicago history <http://www.stpaulsbiblechurch.org/history1.html>: "At 7:16 a.m. on Monday, February 9, 1942, Dr. William W. Iliffe (pastor of the congregation from December 1927 through January 1944) saw smoke coming from the church. The first alarm of the fire truck sounded soon thereafter. St. Paul's Union Church was afire. With all the fire apparatus that could be assembled and the heroic efforts of many citizens of all faiths and creeds, little could be saved of the sanctuary. By noon it was a mass of smoldering ruins.
Hardly had the last blaze died out when friends of the church volunteered to assist in re-building. The catastrophe stirred the community, St. Paul's must be re-built." (Taken from the St. Paul's Union Church Re-Building Fund Campaign brochure.)
The organ [in the rebuilt Church] itself is a rebuilt Moeller pipe organ, three manual, purchased with donations specifically collected for same and was dedicated as a tribute to Rev. and Mrs. Iliffe. The wording on the bronze tablet placed on the organ reads as follows:
"Dedicated January 16, 1944, To the Glory of God And As a Tribute of Affection To Rev. William Wallace Iliffe, D.D. And his Wife Mrs. Frances Townsley Iliffe Who Ministered to St. Paul's Union Church, Chicago From 1927 to 1943. 'Whoso Offereth Praise Glorifieth Me' Psalm 50:23".

I'm writing to you to ask for a little information about William Wallace Iliffe. He performed the wedding for my husband's parents in Erie, Pennsylvania on January 14, 1926, and his name is on their marriage record: "William Wallace Iliffe, Minister of the Gospel."
I'm interested because my husband has written a memoir (for our family), and he includes stories about his parents, including their wedding in Erie. They were from Cleveland, and they eloped to Erie, somehow finding William Wallace Iliffe to marry them. They then had a long and happy life together: they were married for sixty-three years, and they had three sons, all now in their seventies. Our family now includes eight grandchildren (of my mother- and father-in-law) and six great-grandchildren.
In my husband's book, he'd like to include the very nice photo of the Rev. Iliffe (on this page). Would that be alright with you? And is there anything more you might want to tell me about him? My in-laws are long gone, but the story of their elopement to Erie is a magical one in our family, and anything you might choose to share about him, even a little something, would be of interest to our family.
Thank you. And Happy Easter!
With best regards,
Nora James
Dear Nora
Thank you so much for passing on your heartwarming story in which my grandfather, Rev. Iliffe, played a part. You certainly provided me with a very welcome Easter present! I would be most pleased if you honored my grandfather by using his photo. In 1926, Rev. Iliffe was pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, located on the corner of the main square in downtown Erie, Pennsylvania. A postcard showing the First Presbyterian Church as it would have looked when your husband's parents were married can be found at https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Erie_PA_1st_Presby_PHS209.jpg
