Biography

James was born about 1716, estimated from date of marriage.

He was married to Elizabeth (Betty) Kirk on 14 September 1741 at Birstall, St Peter "James Janson of the parish of Batley and Elizabeth Kirk married"[1][2]

They had children Joseph and James, but Elizabeth died in January 1752 and was buried at All Saints, Batley on 17 January 1752. "Eliz. wife of James Ianson, Batley".[3] [4]

He then married Mary Sykes at St Peter, Birstall, on 18 Oct 1752 "James Ianson of Battley and Mary Sykes".[5] They had children Martha, John, and Benjamin.

James died in 1785 and was buried at All Saints, Batley, on 10 February 1785.[6]

Research note

Possible baptism Wakefield 7 Feb 1716, Wakefield All Saints, James son of Joseph Hindson baptised. This may be Joseph Ianson of Morley, baptised Batley 15 May 1680, who connects to the earlier Ianson family. However there is no definite evidence confirming that the Wakefield Hindsons are the same family. The only connection which might account for their being in Wakefield is that Joseph Hindson was living at Dogg House Farm, Lupset in 1708. This is on the Savile estate and the owner was a distant cousin of the Saviles of Howley Hall, who the family would have known (the Howley Saviles were benefactors of the Morley Chapel and one of the Iansons was occupying the Howley gatehouse around 1700). It may be that Joseph had found a job in Wakefield through Savile connections. But it seems unlikely that his son James would then go to Batley as a labourer, there were presumably more opportunities in Wakefield.

Most likely father is John Ianson who married in 1715 and was already living in the Chapel Fold/Heckmondwike area where James's son and grandchildren lived later. This fits better geographically but there is no baptism discovered at the moment. As the family were keen dissenters (including two trustees of Morley Old Chapel 1688 and a founder of Heckmondwike Old Chapel 1674) they do not always have church baptism records, so there are likely to be further unknown sons. The main birth register of Morley chapel starts in 1742, and Heckmondwike Chapel about 1785.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
