Born on 9th of May 1758 John Ingilby was the illegitimate son of Sir John Ingilby Bt. and Mary Wright.[1][2] [3] It was by devise, that he succeeded to his father's estate of Ripley in the West Riding of Yorkshire, on the death of his father in 1772.[2] He was educated at Eton and Emmanuel College, Cambridge.[1][2]
On 25 October 1780 at Kettlethorpe in Lincolnshire he married Elizabeth Amcotts, daughter and heiress of Sir Wharton Amcotts, 1st Baronet of Kettlethorpe [2] and his wife, Anna Amcotts.[4] [1]They had 11 children, 4 sons, John, Charles, William and Vincent and 7 daughters, Elizabeth, Augusta, Anna Maria, Anne, Diana, Julia and Constance. Of the boys only one, William, survived, succeeding him as Sir William Amcotts-Ingilby, 2nd Baronet.[1][3]
John was created a Baronet in 1781 [2] and appointed High Sheriff of Yorkshire for 1781–82. [1]
In 1790 he was returned to Parliament as member for East Retford together with Thomas Pelham Clinton, earl of Lincoln. [5] He did not seek re-election in 1796 due to the costs involved.[1]
He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society as Sir John Ingilby, Bart. of Ripley in Yorkshire and Princes Street, Hanover Square, London in 1793. [6]
John died 13 May 1815 [6][1][7] at Lincoln. [2]
