Biography

William was born in 1826. He died in 1862.

William Jacob Ingle was an abolitionist and left family and hearth some time in 1860 and went to Rossville, GA. Then joined the Union Army and fought and was killed in the Battle of Bull Run. If the body was sent home, no evidence of it exists today. His widow, Caroline, and son James Blythe Ingle went to live with her father, Eliphalett Jervis and William Jacob Ingle's name was not mentioned again. From James Blythe Ingle's death certificate, his father's name was Jack (reported by Teresa Fortner, Ancestry.com).

From the 1860 census in Georgia, William Jacob Ingle lived with another woman and had children by her as well as raising her own children. He fought for the Confederacy and was killed at Malvern Hill. He is not in the 1870 census. In the 1850 census in Madison County, NC, He was married to and lived with Caroline Jane Jervis Ingle and had one son, James Blythe Ingle, age 10. After much search, I am convinced that this is the same William Jacob Ingle (reported by ancestorkb on Ancestry.com).

Jacob was killed in action in the Confederate army (Georgia militia) ON Dec. 13, 1862, at the bottom of Mayre’s Heights at Fredricksburg where the 25th had joined Cobb’s Georgia unit.

(Source for the following paragraph. Doug Downie of Oregon) The brothers were known as rowdy, stubborn, opinionated guys. One brother after the war left NC and said he had “unfinished business” in Northern VA. After taking care of the “business” he moved to Arkansas. The Ingles were in roughly three counties, primarily Buncombe. Their average farm was between 15 to 40 acres with the average being around 20. They were known for fierce arguing around the house and eventually William left and went to the White County area of Georgia shortly before the war.

Ingle-454 and Ingle-372 appear to represent the same person because: they share the same middle name, the same birth year in North Carolina, and they died in the same year, 1862, in the Civil War. Adding more sources would be helpful.
