He married Katherine Nisbet in 1695. They had nine children in 26 years. He died on January 31, 1731, at the age of 68.
John was called late prentice and servant to Mr. Archibald Nisbet, before his admission to the Society of writers 7 August 1691. p 334 [4]

His last will, was dated April 1, 1728, John Inglis appointed his eldest son to be his executor, and left him the residue of his personal estate [7]
