Obituary

Harriett Waugh, 73, after a 3 year struggle with ovarian cancer, died on Saturday, October 15, 2011, at home surrounded by family. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 20, 2011, at St. Mark Lutheran Church, where the family will greet friends one hour prior. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery.

Harriett was born on December 11, 1937, in Riverside, CA, the youngest child of Paul E. and May E. Ingman. She attended school in Riverside, graduating from high school and then attended Riverside Community College before joining the working world. In 1959, Harriett's roommate arranged a blind date with the man who would become her husband later that same year, Roger Waugh. In 1961, they left California and moved to Iowa, Roger's home state, where they have lived for 51 years.

Harriett worked for several different companies in California before the birth of her sons. Then for ten years she stayed home caring for her children. Upon returning to the work world she worked in libraries and community education for the next 24 years. In retirement Harriett enjoyed traveling, reading, shopping, sewing, playing cards, church activities, volunteering and most of all her children and following her grandchildren's activities.

Harriett is survived by her husband, Roger; sons, Paul (Cathy) of Edmond, OK; David (Denise) of Annapolis, MD; daughter, Heather of Waukee and her beloved cat, Gabby. She is also survived by five grandchildren; one great-grandchild and two brothers, P. Howard (Barbara) Ingman and Kenneth (Nancy) Ingman. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Phyllis Johnson.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to one of the following: National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, St. Mark Lutheran Church (West Des Moines), West Des Moines Public Library or Kappa Kappa Iota.

The family would like to express thanks to Central Iowa Hospice for their quick response to Harriett's needs and comfort. A special thanks to Nurse LeAnn for her caring and concerns for Harriett's comfort and her relationship with the family.
