(1934). Ernie Meldrum's Trek. One cannot but feel a deep admiration for the courage of Mr. Ernie Meldrum and his wife and young family, who set out by horse caravan on Monday for the trip across the continent to Sydney. Bad weather on the first day did not daunt them, and they left to schedule to the accompaniment of a rousing cheer from a large number of their friends who gathered to see them start. It was appropriate that the start should be from the Governor Broome, a hostelry indissolubly linked with the earliest history of the city and the favorite meeting place of the best-known pioneers and explorers when the State was young. Ernie's brother Jim is mine-host there, and though of a younger generation himself, he can regale you to all hours with stories of the glamorous days when coaches and horse teams were pulled up and tethered outside the front door. Ernie by the way was one of the first Australians wounded in the' Great War, and as a sailor on the H.M.A.S. Sydney suffered badly in the Emden scrap at Cocos Island. It is the same spirit that led him to the van in the fighting there that is urging him in the 'van' in this courageous trek across the continent. All success to him!
(1934). Kate Has 2981 Miles to Go. This is the diary of a Perth tram driver, Ernie Meldrum, who. with his wife and three young children, left here on Monday in an ambitious attempt to reach Sydney — 3000 miles away — in a one-horse caravan. . . .
