In 1861, John can be found on the census in Cairnie, Aberdeenshire. He was working as a plowman, and in the employ of Mary Watt. Also in residence was her niece Christine George, whom Mary had raised since she was very young.
John fathered two children with Christine, named Annie and Christine, both born illegitimately and the couple never married.
It also looks likely that John was the father of Jessie Horne's daughter Jane, born in Drumblade in 1871 - her father was a John Ingram, farm labourer who had died prior to her marriage in 1893.
After relocating to Glass, John fathered twins, Jessie and James with Ann Stronach, before settling down and marrying Jane Bremner.
