Biography

Christened at Deolali, a British army camp 100 miles NE of Bombay (their home), on Feb 24, 1907, and probably named Mary after her mother. Euphemia was her paternal grandmother's name. She was known as Effie.

Mary Euphemia probably emigrated to the U.K. with her mother and step-father in the mid 1910's. She is found with them in Edinburgh on the 1921 census (see image). She married Charlie Gunby in northern Ireland which was where her mother and stepfather were living at the time.

There is a record for a Roy Gordon Gunby born Jun 27, 1927 in Farnham, Surrey, England, born to a 'Mary', maiden name 'Innes'.

So, if Roy is the son of 'our' Mary Euphemia then she married Charles (Charlie) Gunby (father William, b.1901or 1899) before 1927. Charlie died in Shanghai China June 7, 1938.

Roy Gunby married a Sally R. Ewens in 1955 in Alton Hampshire England, had children: Stuart G Gunby (died an infant), Andrew C Gunby, and Fiona D. Gunby (b. summer 1962). Roy died in 2003 in Grimsby Lincolnshire England (perhaps before his mother). In 1985 Andrew C. Gunby married Tina M. Regnier in Havering, Essex.

St. John's Norway Cemetery in Toronto, Canada confirms grave and cemetery records for Mary Euphemia's mother and step-father, Mary and George Scott, and the record there shows that a request was made (pre-death permission given) in 1997 to allow transfer of the cremated remains of "Mrs E. Gunby, Flora Hogg's sister" to her mother's grave (but this was never done). The correspondence confirms that Mary Euphemia's last name was Gunby and she went by her second name, Euphemia.

Nephew Robert Hogg from Canada reports that he visited his aunt about 1990 when she was living in Aberdeen.
