She married young British Army officer, George French, son of John French and Isabella Hamilton, on 18th December 1862 at Kingston, Canada.[2]

Her husband's career took them from Canada, to Britain, India and Australia, and back to Britain, where he retired and was appointed to command the guard of the crown jewels from 1902 to 1921. When George received a knighthood in 1902, Janet became entitled as Lady French.
Janet passed away, aged 77 years, on 27th March 1917 at Kensington, London.[5] She was survived by her husband and five children.
