Biographical Summary

"Sir Robert Innes of that Ilk, in the Ulquhart, co. Elgin, son and heir of Robert Innes, of the same (M.P. [S] for Elgin 1612), by Elizabeth, daughter of Robert (Elphinstone), 3rd Lord Elphinstone [S], was createda Baronet [S], 20 May 1625, sealed 2 April 1628, but not recorded in the Great Seal Register, with rem. to heirs male whatsoever and with a grant of presumably 16,000 acres of Nova Scotia, of which he had seizin in May 1628. Was M.P. [S] for Elgin, 1639-41 and 1648; had charters of the lands and barony of Delny, 12 February 1681, and those of Newton, Banacoul, etc 25 July 1636. He was made by the Parliament one of the committee of estates and a P.C. [S], yet in 1649 appears to have been considered a Royalist. He married Grizel, daughter of James (Stewart), Earl of Moray [S], by Elizabeth, 1st daughter and heir of line of James (Stewart), Earl of Moray [S], sometime Regent [S]. Hedied between 1649 and 1660."

Robert, the 23d Innes of that ilk, by his wife, dame Elizabeth Elphinstone, had, with three daughter, two sons, Sir Robert, who succeeded him, and Sir John, styled of Cromy, who was father of Sir Robert Innes of Muirtoun.

The elder son, Sir Robert, 24th of that ilk, was created a baronet of Nova Scotia, to him and his heirs male whatever, 29th May 1625, being the fourth on the roll. The family annalist states that a cadet of the family, Innes of Balveny, with the view of obtaining precedence of his chief, had applied for a baronetcy, of which Sir Robert Gordon of Gordonston, a gentleman of the king’s bedchamber, brother of the earl of Sutherland, and an intimate friend of Innes of Innes, sent him timely notice. He immediately applied for one of a prior date, which was granted, and Balveny’s deferred till 1628. Sir Robert was sworn a privy councillor for life, and appointed one of the committee of Estates by the parliament, in 1641. He seems, however, to have been a royalist, for when he was forced to acknowledge the parliament in 1649, he was obliged to get his eldest son, Robert, to become surety for his good behaviour, intime to come. He had three sons and five daughters. The sons were; Sir Robert, second baronet; James, of Lichnett; and Captain William Innes of the guards."
