The Internet Surname Database (surnamedb.com) is an excellent resource for researching the origins and meanings of last names.

The database has been growing since 1980. It was started as a small family business more than 20 years ago, and is still run by the same family. Originally it offered information by mail. Now the full database is available online, entirely for free.
