Dr. John William Irby was the first of the ten children of William Blunt Irby and Sarah W. Stith. He married Martha Bacon Taylor (1824-1894). They had twelve children. This Familysearch family tree states that John William Irby had a child with his enslaved woman, Lucy Big Lou Irby Bacon, Eliza Irby Gates, 1842-1930. An Ancestry.com family tree states that Eliza was fathered by John William’s brother, Freeman Buckner Irby. [1] [2] Note: no record has been found to date to verify who fathered Big Lou’s child.
In 1850, the Irby family lived on their plantation in Panola County, Mississippi. All members of the household were born in Virginia, except as noted. The household included John W. Irby, 26, an M.D. and farmer, with $4500 in real estate; his wife, Martha, 26; their children, Louisa, 5; John, 3; and Daniel, 1, born in Mississippi. Also living with them was E. J. A. Boznton, 36, overseer.[3]

Note: the 30 year old female was Big Lou (Lucy); and the seven year old mulatto girl was probably Lou’s daughter, Eliza (b. 1842). Another Irby household, that of Edward Irby, held 15 enslaved persons. (This Edward may be the brother of John Wm Irby) [4]
In 1860, the Irby family lived in Panola County, Mississippi. They used the Peach Creek post office. The household included J. W. Irby, 40, born in Virginia, a physician, with $15000 in real estate and $40000 in personal estate; his wife Martha, 36, b. VA; their eight children, the first two were born in VA, and the rest were b. In Mississippi: L. W. (daughter, Louisa W.), 15, in school; son, J. F., 12, in school; daughter, A. T., 9, in school; dau., J. V., 7, in school; son, W. T., 5; Thomas, 4; Martha, 3; and Freeman, 1. Also living with them was Green Halberts, 27, b. NC. [5]

In 1870, the Irby family lived in Panola, Mississippi. The household included J. W. Irby, 50, born in Virginia; his wife Martha, 45, b. VA; and their children, all born in Mississippi, except as noted: John, 23, b. VA; Annie, 18; Ida V., 16; Henry N., 14; Thomas, 12; Martha, 10; Freeman, 8; Robert M., 6; William B., 4; and Dabney, 2.[7]
John William Irby was born 1 February 1820 in Nottoway County, Virginia, the son of William B. and Anna W. (Stith) Irby. He married Martha B. Taylor. John died 1 May 1878 at age 58. He is buried with his wife Martha in Davis Chapel Cemetery, Panola, Mississippi. [8]
