Biography

Joseph Ireland was born in 1800 in Egg Harbor City, Atlantic Co, New Jersey, USA. [1] He was the son of Job Ireland (1772-1829) and Catherine (Price) Ireland Foster (1779-1860).

Joseph first married Isabella Hackett (1802-1847) in 1819 or 1820 in New Jersey (there are conflicting dates and places reported). They had many children together (details need further verification), including:

  • Mary (Ireland) Hackett (1820-1870)
  • Samuel Ireland (1822-1847) m. Rachel; 1 dtr[2]
  • Job Ireland (1824-?)
  • Catherine Ireland (1827-1891) - did not marry[3]
  • John Ireland (1829-1897) m. Elizabeth Adams
  • Hannah (Ireland) Adams (1831-1882)
  • Isabella Ireland (1833-?)
  • Abigail (Ireland) Sanders (1835-1891)
  • Joseph Ireland (1837-1884)
  • Dorcas (Ireland) Baker (1837-1921)
  • Hezekiah Ireland (1840-1918)
  • Japhet Ireland (1842-1847) - child death[4]

Isabella passed away on 4 Sep 1847.

1850 US Census:[5] Joseph was listed as 49 and born in NJ. He was living in Egg Harbor Twp, Atlantic Co, NJ with his children Mary (30; NJ), Job (25; NJ), John (21; NJ), Hannah (19; NJ), Isabella (17; NJ), Abigail (15; NJ), Joseph (13; NJ), Darius (13; NJ), and Hezekiah (10; NJ).

Later in 1850, Joseph married Sophia A Homan (1821-1860) on 15 Dec 1850 in Egg Harbor Twp, Atlantic Co, NJ.[6] They also had multiple children (details need verification), including:

Sophia passed away on 6 Apr 1860, so never appeared on a US Census with her husband or children.

1860 US Census:[8] Joseph was listed as 63yo and born in NJ. He was living in Egg Harbor Twp, Atlantic Co, NJ with his mother Catharine Ireland (81; NJ), his son Hezekiah (19; NJ) from his first marriage, and his children from his second marriage: Alice (9; NJ), Samuel (6; NJ), Elijah (4; NJ), and Amanda (0; NJ). The household also included three young women with different surnames, perhaps staff or other relations, including Margaret Boice (30; NJ).

At some point in the 1860s, Joseph married third to Hannah, reported to be Hannah (Risley) Pryor (1809-1889). If this is the correct Hannah, then it's highly unlikely that they had children together as she would have been in her 50s. For further investigation: it's possible that she might have brought children of her own into the family (if she had any).

1870 US Census:[9] Joseph Ireland was listed as 70yo and born in NJ. He was living in Egg Harbor Twp, Atlantic Co, NJ with his third wife Hannah (60; NJ), and his children from his second marriage: Alice (19; NJ), Samuel Ireland (16; NJ), and Amanda (10; NJ). The household also included his widowed son Hezekiah (30; NJ) from his first marriage, and Hezekiah's two surviving daughters Emma C Ireland (9; NJ) and Mary Ireland (5; NJ). Finally, Margaret Boice (41; NJ) appears again, presumably either as a staff or other relation.

1880 US Census:[10] Joseph Ireland was listed as 79yo and born in NJ. He was living in Egg Harbor Twp, Atlantic Co, NJ with the family of his son Samuel (27; NJ) along with his daughter Amanda (22; NJ) and the ever-present Margaret Boice (50; NJ). Joseph is labeled as widowed; it's not clear if that means that third wife Hannah has passed or that they've separated.

Joseph passed away at age 84 on 31 Aug 1884 in Egg Harbor Township, Atlantic County, New Jersey. He is buried in Friends-Central Cemetery in Linwood, Atlantic County, New Jersey, USA.[1]

Research Notes

Some researchers report that Joseph was born in 1799, but that needs to be sourced. His gravestone says he was 84yo at his death, which allows for a DOB of either 1799 or 1800.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:
