He married first Mary Elizabeth Annis on 18 Nov 1843 in Presque Isle, Maine.
According to the 1850 US Census[2], Jonathan lived with his wife Elizabeth and their three children in Aroostock County ME:
Jona Ireland (25)
Elizabeth (25)
Joel (5)
John L (3)
Charlotte E (1)
In the 1860 US Census,[3] Jonathan is shows as living with his wife, parents, and the following children (presumably all his except for Wheeler):
Silas Ireland (73)
Celia (62)
Jonathan (37 - or a birth year of c1823)
Elizabeth (37)
Wheeler (19 - believed to be Jonathan's youngest brother, and son of Silas and Celia)
Joel (14)
Lewis (12)
Charlotte (10)
Laura (8)
Alonzo (5)
Farewell (2)
By the time of the 1870 US Census,[4] Jonathan and Elizabeth are living with their two youngest children (Farewell died very young):
Jonathan Ireland (45)
Elizabeth (45)
Laura (17)
Alonzo (14)
Elizabeth died in 1875.
Here's where it gets complicated. Jonathan's son Joel had married Lucretia P Buck; they had one daughter, Elizabeth Elva Ireland. Elizabeth was born in 1879, shortly before (it seems) the death of her father Joel. It appears that Jonathan married his daughter-in-law Lucretia very quickly after Joel's death. Jonathan raised his niece Elizabeth as his daughter - and had one child (Mabel) with Lucretia.
Jonathan and Lucretia appear together in the 1880 US Census[5] with Jonathan's daughter Eva and Lucretia's daughter (and Jonathan's granddaughter) Elizabeth:
Jona (55)
Lucretia (40)
Eva (11 - looks like this might be a granddaughter?)
Elizabeth (1)
In the 1900 US Census[6], Jonathan is shown living with his second wife Lucretia, two of his grandchildren (children of Charlotte; deceased), one daughter (of son Joel and Johnathan's second wife, Lucretia), and his daughter with Lucretia.
Jonathan Ireland (75)
Lucretia (59)
George W Marston (22 - grandson)
Nettie L Marston (12 - granddaughter)
Lizzie C Ireland (21 - J's granddaughter and L's daughter)
Mabel Ireland (16 - J and L's daughter)
Jonathan passed away in 1910. He's buried in Fairmount Cemetery in Presque Isle, ME.[1]
