"In 1779 Alvin Moxley bought 320 acres from Robert Warren, executor for Charles Thornton, deceased, and Alexander Keith and his wife, Mary, formerly the wife of Charles Thornton, Alvin Moxley married Anne Dent Ireland, whose first husband was Richard Hooe.
The Grove was subsequently owned by Gilbert Ireland Moxley (1778-1811), B. G. D. Moxley, and Lucy Douglas Moxley Washington. Miss Louisa Scott Moxley, now (1941) living with her half-sister, Mrs. Washington, was born February 1841."[1]
Anne's father was Gilbert Ireland, as per his 1755 will: IRELAND, GILBERT, St Mary's. 17 Jan, 1755; 6 Mar., 1755 " ... I give to my eldest dau. Anne Ireland my plantation lying near to Walter Davis's called "Charing Cross" or "Swillenham." ... "[2]
