Biography

James ~ (1769-1819) (J128|X1769J1) Baptism: 30 Apr 1769 Rotherham YKS ENG Parents: John and JaneJD. Birth: around 1771 (from Death). Apprenticeship: 25 Jul 1783 Sheffield YKS From the indenture books: "James the son of John ~ of Rotherham in the County of York Gardiner by Indentures of the above Date was bound to Stephen Butler of Sheffield in the same County Cutler for seven years from the Date." This would normally be until his 21st birthday. James later became a Freeman of the Company of Cutlers, the only Ironside to do so, taking the mark "964" in 1791.HCCS. Marriage: 17 Aug 1789 Sheffield YKS ENG to Mary OAKES (M507) {Sheffield Cathedral. James, bachelor; Mary, spinster; both of this parish; neither signed. Witnesses Anne OAKES, Samuel BLACKLIN}PR. Marriage: 5 Nov 1792 Sheffield YKS ENG to Sarah SOUTH (S49) {Sheffield Cathedral. James, widower; Sarah, spinster. Both of this parish, neither signed. Witnesses William SOUTH, John HALL. Note John HALL also witnessed marriage of George SMITH to Jane ~ (J540).}PR. Death: Oct 1819 Sheffield YKS ENG aged 48 {SBI: Sheffield Parish Church, 11 Oct 1819 James aged 48, cutler of Coalpit Lane}JD, SBI, NBI. Will: 5 Oct 1819 In the name of God Amen. I, James Ironside in the parish of Sheffield in the county of York on the fifth day of October 1819 do make this my last will & testament. That after the Docter's Bill, Funeral Expenses, and any other lawful and just Debits be regularly paid. // 1st I the said James Ironside do will the Affidavit and money in hand amounting to 28 Pounds 1 shilling due on the 23rd of October. After the above expenses and any regular and just debts are paid, I the said James Ironside do will the remainder to be divided as follows. // That the remainder of the Money be equally divided betwixt his [sic] two sons. Namely John Ironside the Elder (J1311) and Jon'n [Jonathan] Ironside the Younger (J1687). And that John Ironside have the lot of Cloathes No 1 with the Box. And that Jon'n Ironside have the lot of Cloathes No 2 with the umberrella. // That my brother William Ironside (W197) have the Bedsteads Bed-Matrass pillows and Bolsters, Bed-cover & 1 pair of Double Blankets. // and that my Sister Elizabeth Crookes (E236) have 1 Single Blanket & 1 pair of Double Blankets, and that Sam'l Ironside (S12) see this will executed. Proved 5 Nov 1819: "...the whole of the Goods, Chattels & credits of the deceased within the Diocese of York do not amount in value to the sum of One Hundred Pounds."
